Year by year, Virginia becomes better known for its winemaking. As wineries continue to pop up around the state like hotels on a Monopoly board, I hear fewer and fewer people say “wait, there’s wine in Virginia?”
Taking a look at the new 2011 Virginia Wine map, it’s ever more populated by those cool little red dots that each represents a winery. Although the state is covered by these red dots, it’s also great to see those areas where wineries are huddled together. While it might increase the friendly competition between the businesses, it also addresses a growing demand in Virginia: wine tasting destinations.
There are numerous “winery hotspots” that surround some of the best places to visit in Virginia. The Monticello AVA (near Charlottesville,) and the Northern Virginia wine region (where we’re located, near Washington DC,) are two good examples. Wineries look to place themselves in strategic locations (where climate, soil, and tourism meet,) so when asking “what are the best places to visit in Virginia,” I’d say “wherever there are wineries.” If the area is great to visit, you can be sure that a winery has befriended it.
